March 14th Is Potato Chip Day! Celebrate With the Unique Hitachino Ale

March 14th Is Potato Chip Day!

National Potato Chip Day on March 14th celebrates the snack food popular all over the world. It's a day that can be enjoyed by everyone as there is such a abundance of flavours of potato chips and you can always find something you've never tried before!

Speaking of the origin of potato chips, it all started on August 24, 1853, when an unhappy restaurant customer kept sending his potatoes back to the kitchen, complaining they were thick and soggy. Chef George Crum decided to slice the potatoes as thin as possible, frying them until crisp and adding extra salt. To the chef’s surprise, the customer loved them. The crispy potatoes soon became a regular item on the restaurant’s menu under the name of “Saratoga Chips.”

In the 20th century, potato chips spread beyond chef-cooked restaurant fare and began to be mass-produced for home consumption. The first flavored chips in the United States, barbecue flavor, were being manufactured and sold by 1954.
